Samsung Galaxy S20 FE vs. Galaxy S20 series

One noticeable thing about the Samsung Galaxy S series is that the price increases every year. Although it is expectable, the difference between the previous and latest smartphone models is significant. For example, from Galaxy S10 to the S20, the basic version went from $899 to $999. However, the difference between the premium models is even more prominent. From Galaxy S10 Plus to the S20 Plus, the price went up from $999 to $1199.

Samsung offers other smartphone options, such as Note, Z Flip, and Z Fold line up. However, the price for those is $1,000 or higher. They also release a weaker version of the original models, called the A-series, which usually cost less than $400. Therefore, people have to choose between buying a premium or a weaker/cheaper model when it comes to Samsung smartphones. However, what if you are looking for an almost premium version but don’t want to take $1,000 out of your pocket? This is where Samsung Galaxy S20 FE comes in the picture.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE vs. Galaxy S20 series

First of all, you may be wondering what the “FE” in Galaxy S20 FE means. It stands for “Fan Editon,” and apparently it is built for Samsung fans who did not have the chance of buying a Galaxy S20 at launch. Not everyone has that kind of money to spend on smartphones. Therefore the company has released the FE version of the latest series. Galaxy S20 FE comes with almost all the premium features; however, it costs less than the original models. It is priced at $699, which is significantly less.

The Galaxy S20 FE looks very similar to the basic S20 line-up. However, the first noticeable difference is the color palette. Samsung offers more color options for the S20 FE series, which are six in total. Each of them looks very appealing, and it’s quite plain the company targets at the Millennials. However, I’m sure others are pleased about the S20 FE just as much. Who doesn’t like options?

The color range is not the only thing differentiating the Galaxy S20 FE from the standard models. Samsung made some changes to the FE Edition in order to bring the price down. Compared to the glass body, the original S20 line-up features, the S20 FE comes with a plastic body. However, it is not the “glasstic” we are used to on the Galaxy A51; the S20 FE body feels more delicate. Although it feels like a premium smartphone, its lightweight gives it away.

Another difference between the two models is the screen size. Galaxy S20 FE features a larger display than the original standard version; however, it is still smaller than the S20 Plus. The S20 FE comes with a 6.5 inches screen and features a chin look-alike bottom to be more specific. The resolution is also weaker compared to the original smartphones. The S20 FE features an FHD+ resolution instead of QHD+ and comes with a flat-screen instead of a curved one. Another difference is that Galaxy S20 comes with 6GB RAM, which is less compared to the 8GB and 12GB options available on the S20 series.

Camera-wise, the Galaxy S20 FE model sports three on the back, and one hole-punch in the front. Back cameras are a 12MP standard lens, a 12MP wide-angle lens, and an 8MP telephoto camera, while the front-facing camera is 32MP. Although the front camera is better than 10MP, it doesn’t feature the dual phase-detect autofocus like the S20 line-up. Due to the 12MP sensor, the S20 FE can’t film video in 8K. Overall, the camera has many of the premium S20 series features, such as the single-take mode.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE and Galaxy S20 series similarities

Since the Fan Edition model is the affordable version of the S20 series, you may wonder what the similarities are. One of the most important aspects of S20 FE is the chipset. The same Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC powers it, which means the user can enjoy premium performance. However, I’m not very sure how the 6GB RAM can handle storage apps, but we’ll see.

Galaxy S20 FE also features the same 120Hz refresh rate as the original S20 series. It also sports the same 4,500mAh battery, which should provide a better battery life considering the low display resolution. In terms of storage, Samsung offers the only one option, the 128GB. However, if you should want more storage, you can expand the storage up to 1TB.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE keeps some of the small details available on almost all smartphones of this type, such as IP68 water and dust resistance and wireless charging.

Is Samsung Galaxy S20 FE worth the price?

Although it is built as a premium alternative smartphone, the Galaxy S20 FE smartphone costs $699, which is something in between expensive and affordable. I would say that it is not exactly cheap, but it does feel the gap Samsung has created between the $500-$1000 models. So far, Samsung many choices when it comes to low-end and ultra-premium smartphones. However, the company is now competing in the upper mid-range market too.

However, is this the right time for the S20 FE model? Samsung S20 series has been out for about seven months, which means they are available at a reduced price. You can acquire a new Samsung Galaxy S20 unlocked for $672 on Amazon, which is cheaper than what the company asks for the S20 FE model. It would’ve made more sense if the company released the Fan Edition and S20 series simultaneously. However, they didn’t, so I’m not sure if this is an excellent move profit-wise.

Don’t get me wrong; the Galaxy S20 FE is still worth it. However, judging by the current marketplace, I don’t see how it can shine. The FE line offers more color options, a strong chipset, and long battery life compared to the mid-range models. Plus, Samsung has a trade-in offer that can get you $500 off the initial S20 FE price. That, of course, if you trade-in the right smartphone. Therefore, the Galaxy S20 FE is worth buying only if you trade-in an old model. Otherwise, it makes no sense to buy it full price since you can get the flagship model at a lower cost.

Pre-order Galaxy S20 FE now

Samsung already opened up the pre-orders for the new Galaxy S20 FE model. The smartphone will officially come out on October 2, 2020. The company offers the unlocked version, so do other retailers. There is also an exclusive version of this model on Verizon. It is called Galaxy S20 FE 5G UW, and it costs $50 more than the standard version.

The new Fan Edition smartphone comes in both 5G and 4G options. However, the price in the UK differs from the EU. The 5G model is priced at £699 ($890) in the UK. On the other hand, it is available for €759 ($886) in the EU. The 4G model is priced at £599 ($763) in the UK. However, it costs €659 ($769) in the EU, which is slightly higher.

Although the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE seems like a great acquisition, is it worth it compared to other devices available on the current marketplace? I would say no, but it is up to the buyer’s preference. If the color is very important to you, I can see why you would go for it.
