PS5 To Be Unveiled Today — Watch It Live

Sony has announced that the full specifications of the upcoming PS5 gaming console will be revealed on March 18, 2020, at 9 AM PT (12 PM ET / 4 PM GMT). Fans will have the option to watch the event live via the official PlayStation Blog.

What to expect from PlayStation 5

Microsoft has also revealed more details about the Xbox Series X, and it seems that the Green Team is ready for a fierce fight. The Xbox Series C comes with an impressive AMD Zen 2 octa-core CPU that can reach a frequency of 3.8 GHz while a custom AMD RDNA 2 GPU should provide plenty of power for remarkable graphics and superb performance.

Many details about the PS5 have remained elusive as Sony strived to keep them a secret. It is known that the console will employ a CPU based on a 7nm architecture, which should be fast. Support for ray-tracing and 8K resolutions was also mentioned along with a high-performance storage solution and a redesigned controller.

PlayStation Japan representatives have stated that the reveal was planned for GDC 2020, but the massive event has been canceled due to concerns regarding the spread of the highly-contagious coronavirus.

PS5 to support backward compatibility

One of the most anticipated features of PlayStation 5 is the reintroduction of backward compatibility, a feature that wasn’t offered by the PS4. While Sony argued at the time that the unique architecture of the PS3 processor was too restrictive to make the games playable on the PS4, it appears that the roadblock has been surpassed.

Some fans hope that the entire PS catalog can be played from discs on the new console, but it would be more realistic to expect the announcement of a list of curated titles that will be compatible. A strong selection of launch titles should cement the reputation of the PS5 as a revolutionary device, with a few exclusives having been announced already. It remains to see which of the rumors will materialize and which were false.

Remember to watch the event live on PlayStation Blog, today, Wednesday, March 18, at 9 AM PT (12 PM ET / 4 PM GMT).
